Zeeland Public Schools Celebrates Thriving Spanish Immersion Program Through K–5 Cultural Celebrations

Zeeland, Mich. — Zeeland Public Schools welcomed students and their families to its annual Spanish Immersion Cultural Celebration, highlighting a program that continues to grow and thrive from Kindergarten through 12th grade.

Next year, Zeeland Public Schools will be the first district in Ottawa County to offer a PreK Spanish Immersion. Zeeland Public Schools continues to nurture this popular and thriving program for families seeking a strong academic programming with a focus on culture and community.

This year’s K–5 Cultural Celebrations were held at Zeeland West High School and Zeeland East High School to accommodate the large number of family members and friends who attend. The celebrations brought together the connected and joyful community of learning that defines Spanish Immersion at ZPS.

Families enjoyed special grade-level activities, student artwork on display, authentic foods available for tasting, and a mariachi band performance that added to the festive atmosphere. More than just a celebration, the event offered a clear picture of what Spanish Immersion looks like in action across Zeeland Public Schools.

At Zeeland Public Schools, Spanish Immersion is part of the school day's rhythm, with students learning in Spanish across subject areas while growing in language proficiency and confidence.

Superintendent Rod Hetherton said of the evening, “It’s great to be here tonight with families and see how special this is for our Zeeland community. The Cultural Celebration shows what Spanish Immersion is really all about at ZPS. Students are learning, growing, and families get to see that firsthand.”

While the recent celebrations focused on elementary students in kindergarten through fifth grade, the Spanish Immersion continues in both the middle and high schools. This in-demand option allows students to continue developing their language skills over time.
