Cityside student moves to next round of spelling bee

Correctly spelling "wiseacre" during a regional spelling bee February 12 vaulted Cityside Middle School seventh grader Madison Wiler to the next level of competition. Madison was competing with more than 20 students who gathered in the Roosevelt Elementary gymnasium for the Ottawa Area Regional Spelling Bee. Fellow Zeeland students taking part that night represented Cityside and Creekside Middle Schools, Roosevelt Elementary, Woodbridge Elementary, Zeeland Quest, and Zeeland Christian.   Students also participated from Allendale, Coopersville and Spring Lake.  The contest is for fourth through eighth graders.

Madison is now preparing for the Greater Grand Rapids Spelling Bee on March 12 at the Gerald R. Ford Museum auditorium.  Congratulations, Madison, and best of luck!

West wrestler earns 100th win

Congratulations to Zeeland West senior Jordan Sternik  who achieved his 100th career win during the team district wrestling match against Unity Christian.  Jordan is only the third West wrestler in the history of the school to accomplish such a feat. Jordan began wrestling as a freshman and earning a spot in the “Zeeland West Wrestling Century Club” has been his goal from the start.  Jordan is an encouraging example of hard work and determination.

Quincy's Ben Braymer named Cool Teacher

In the 18th year of WGVU's "Cool Teacher" contest, Quincy Elementary educator Ben Braymer earned the prestigious title, thanks to an entry from Quincy fifth grader Hannah Peirce.  As a result, a WGVU film crew visited Braymer's classroom recently to take pictures and bring pizza for the entire class.  The families of all Cool Teachers and the students who nominate them receive a free round-trip visit to Chicago via Amtrak train.   Congratulations, Ben!

Hannah is the daughter of Patricia and Andrew Peirce.

Zeeland junior earns top prize in Walk poster contest

A poster created by Zeeland East High School junior Richard Nuth is the winning entry for this year's Walk for Warmth fund raiser.

"The layering of the snowflakes gave an interesting depth to the graphic," a judge from Fairly Painless Advertising agency in Holland said. "It was clean and readable."  The agency judged entries from three high schools: Zeeland, Holland, and Coopersville.

Debra Kemppainen, a Zeeland computer art teacher, said Richard has a "great sense of design" and plans next year to enroll in Advanced Placement art.  "The feedback from Fairly Painless Advertising was a great way to integrate some real-world instruction from professionals. We hope to be involved in this again next year."

This is the fourth year a poster contest took place to promote the annual Walk for Warmth, which takes Saturday, February 9, at 8:30 a.m. at City On A Hill, 100 Pine Street, in Zeeland. Walk for Warmth is an annual event that raises money for households in Ottawa County that have received a shut-off notice from their utility company. The poster is distributed throughout Ottawa County to help raise awareness of the event, and the contest helps to connect students with community issues.

"This contest is an excellent way to engage with students and connect them to the community," event organizer Mike Stock of the  Ottawa County Community Action Agency said. "And adding Fairly Painless Advertising to the program adds a valuable, real-world aspect to the project since these are graphics professionals providing the critiques. We are grateful for the time Fairly Painless Advertising has taken to do this, and the art classes will learn from the agency's feedback."

Richard's accomplishment was recognized by the Zeeland Board of Education on January 21.  Congratulations, Richard!
