Another school year has ended and we congratulate 19 employees of Zeeland Public Schools who have chosen to retire. The Zeeland Board of Education honored the retirees at a special reception in May. We encourage you to extend your best wishes to these individuals and thank them for the commitment to the education and well being of our students. Their experience totals more than 400 years of service. Best wishes, retirees, as you begin your new venture!
On Monday, June 11 the Zee Bus will start rolling for its ninth summer throughout our school district. The Zee Bus is Zeeland's summer mobile literacy program and has books available for ages preschool through high school. No preregistration is required and the service is free to all families living within the school district.
A new feature awaits readers this summer: On Fridays the bus will visit Lawrence Street Park in Zeeland from 10 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. for play group activities and story time, according to organizer Mary Beth Timmer. Summer reading is one of the most important things to do for your child so they continue to increase their reading skills and develop the habit of daily reading for pleasure. The traditional picnic wrapping up the Zee Bus program for the summer happens August 10, 12 to 1 p.m., at Roosevelt Elementary.

Following more than three and a half hours of discussion, the Zeeland Board of Education adopted the following resolution at a special meeting May 24.
The Zeeland Board of Education does not condone plagiarism in the classroom, among the staff or as any part of the education process. Therefore we are taking the following action:
A letter of reprimand will be placed in Dr. Barry’s file regarding this incident of plagiarism.
Dr. Barry will be suspended from his position for two weeks, without pay. This suspension will be effective immediately, from Friday, May 25, through Thursday, June 7. This suspension will mean Dr. Barry may not participate in work activities or school activities, including graduation and end of year events.
In the fall of 2012, Dr. Barry will be required to spend time in each school building, K-12th, sharing a message with students and staff about the pitfalls of plagiarism.
We feel the above action is necessary in this matter because we have found more than one instance of plagiarism committed by Dr. Barry.

Help support our new school! If you are looking for a way to get involved with Adams Elementary, or hoping to meet many new faces at our school, please consider being a part of the Adams Family Association. Although every parent at our school is a part of the family association, we are looking for a solid base of parents and friends that would be willing to be on the Adams Family Association Board, become Classroom Ambassadors, and support educational endeavors together. Help us start out operating as a healthy family by planning activities such as open houses, spirit days, staff appreciation and organize fundraisers. Here is what we are looking for:
Board Members
President - open
Vice President - open
Treasurer - open
Secretary - open
Principal - Nancy Burk
Classroom Ambassadors
One - two Ambassadors per grade. These people would be the liaison between classroom and parents. They would provide support to our board members and principal through input at meetings throughout the year, and help plan A.F.A. events.
If you are interested in partnering together with us, please contact Amy Geerlings at 616-748-3275 or email at ageerlin@zps.org or Nancy Burk at nburk@zps.org

Starting next fall, our kindergartners will attend class in our six elementary schools. That means the end of an era for the Early Childhood Center, which served as our kindergarten school since 1988. If you're an ECC "grad," parent, grandparent or community member, come to our ice cream social May 17, 5 to 7 p.m. Walk the halls of the ECC one last time. If you are planning to attend May 17, please RSVP. This summer, the building will be transformed into a preschool center.
In an effort to reduce summer learning loss, a group of Zeeland elementary teachers have been working on a program called the “Summer Stretch” for children in kindergarten through fifth grades. Research shows that on average, students lose 2.6 months of academic achievement during the summer months. As little as 20 minutes of reading or math each day can drastically improve this statistic. Elementary students are bringing home a brochure that describes four choices for summer review and includes the form you need to complete in order to participate. We are committed to full participation from ALL Zeeland elementary students, but aim to be accommodating to busy summer schedules.
“Learning without limits” is the mission statement driving Zeeland Quest when it opens for the first day of class August 6. The program, organized and operated solely by Zeeland Public Schools, will replace Innocademy, the alternative learning program that will find a new home in June. Innocademy will no longer be a part of ZPS.
