The Zeeland Public Schools district covers 94 square miles of prime growth area in West Michigan, encompassing the city of Zeeland, a portion of the city of Holland, and eight rural townships in Ottawa and Allegan Counties. Traditional community values and a robust job market are attracting many young families to the area. We currently serve 5,738 students in grades kindergarten through twelfth. We also provide preschool, child care, recreation and adult community education  Our budget is adopted by a publicly elected local board of education. The budget can be reviewed by clicking on the link below.  Like other schools in Michigan, our budget is based upon the best estimate of what the state will provide in per pupil funding. Budget and Salary Compensation Transparency Reporting

Like any organization, Zeeland Public Schools has a variety of expenditures including utilities, fuel for buses, technology, facility maintenance, insurance, personnel, and office supplies.  Schools also pay for classroom supplies, specialized services for students with special needs, and many other instruction-related items.  Public schools, like many other government entities, have elected boards that control the expenditure (and receipt) of school funds.  The school board members carry out educational obligations at the local level, and they have the ultimate responsibility for school operations.

Because schools are a service industry, the largest share of every school's expenditures is salaries and benefits.  Retirement costs are state mandated.  Schools have increased co-pays for health insurance and reduced benefit programs for health insurance for staff.  Insurance costs include health, dental, vision, and life.
