Parents are encouraged to attend an informal meeting Tuesday, October 18, 6 p.m., to discuss preschool education in the district. The meeting will take place at the Early Childhood Center, 140 W. McKinley. Starting in September of 2012, all kindergarten and Young 5 classes will be moved to our elementary buildings. The Early Childhood Center will be home to all preschool programs in the district. How do you think our preschool program should look? This planning session is a chance to discuss the options. If you cannot attend the meeting but would like to serve or participate in the planning, contact ECC Principal Nancy Burk, 616-748-3275.

Also, we want to measure the need for child care in the district. To help out, please take a few moments to complete this child care survey. Deadline for completion is October 17.
Teacher Gail Weigel kicks off this class each year by asking students to make a public presentation about something that is NOT food. Actual cooking demonstrations come later in the semester.
"This five-minute skills speech is a traditional warm-up lesson," Weigel said. On Monday, students had to include iPads as part of their presentation. Some spoke, while images projected by their iPads played on the screen. Others introduced their video, which included their recorded narration. Thank you, Gail and students, for allowing us to observe your class. We will be visiting other classes at West and East in the weeks ahead to see how the iPad is being used.

The Zeeland Board of Education voted unanimously September 13 to approve a two-year contract for the district’s 300 teachers that will reduce operational expenses for this school year by about $1 million. David Van Ginhoven, Assistant Superintendent for Business Services, said the cost reduction is made possible through these key agreements with the Zeeland Education Association (ZEA):
A majority of the 5,800 students enrolled at Zeeland Public Schools report to class Tuesday, September 6. There are a few staggered starts to keep in mind. At both high schools, freshmen start September 6, giving them a chance to become acquainted with their school. Sophomores, juniors and seniors begin on September 7. Among kindergartners, most start class September 6 but "A" schedule students at the Early Childhood Center and at Quincy Elementary begin September 7. If you haven't done so, please download a handy, one-page calendar for the new year HERE. You'll note that the start and dismissal times for Cityside and Creekside Middle Schools are the same. Those are the correct times. Incorrect times were published for Creekside in the Spotlight on Schools newsletter.
In this second of a series, ZPS Technology Director Stephen Braunius explains the path taken over a two-year period that led to selection of the iPad for student use. Factors considered included ease of use, battery life, and the fact that the iPad can be used at home without wireless access. After viewing the video below, we encourage you to visit and bookmark iLearn@ZPS.

Future students of Adams Elementary donned hard hats August 11 and turned over dirt to mark the start of construction. The school is scheduled to open in Fall, 2012, and will house up to 250 kindergarten through fifth grade students. This project will complete Phase I of the school, which is designed for expansion based upon student growth. Principal of the new elementary school will be Nancy Burk, currently principal of the Early Childhood Center. In July, the Zeeland Board of Education approved bids for the construction. You can view that bid list HERE.
